The Knowledge Power Play: Do You Hoard It Or Whore It?

This weekend I took my 6-year old daughter Christmas shopping. We walked around a few stores and she selected gifts for family members. It’s important she understands that holidays are about giving, not just getting. As we browsed the aisles she carefully selected items based on what she thought everyone would enjoy. Sorry Mom, it looks like baking cookies for Grandchildren is what you’re supposed to like doing. We reached an area of the store that contained bedding and blankets. She walked right over to some blankets and asked “Do you like soft blankets?”, “Of course” I replied. “Oh, then you probably don’t need to buy these. I’m not saying we got you a blanket, but if you like these then you don’t need to buy one”. At least I know how I’ll be keeping warm this Christmas morning.

 

Kids love knowing secrets. They can hardly contain themselves. Most of them want to throw out a few hints, just to keep your interest. The reason for this, is power. They finally know something that experienced adults aren’t privy to. And they want to withhold this information for as long as possible. Isn’t this true amongst adults? Especially in business when you’re trying to demonstrate your self-worth? Knowledge truly is power.
